The Greenbrier East Spartans took on their first Kanawha Valley team on Saturday against the Ripley Vikings. The weather finally was nice and warm for the afternoon game at Spartan Yards. The Vikings arrived about an hour late and then tried to get the Junior Varsity to play first but Head Coach Ben Routson said NOPE. So finally after the Spartans hit the field since being their since 9 o’clock that morning they got on the field to play around 1:15. Senior Dan “Dano” Smead was on the hill for the Spartans. The Vikings scored two runs in the top of the 1st inning to put the Vikings up 2-0. The Spartans had trouble getting a bat on the ball most of the day. Once again we had one bad inning with the Vikings scoring about 4 runs, which meant we had an uphill battle. After Smead was pulled in the fourth, Senior Josh “Dino” Norman was put on the hill. It took a while for Dino to get settled and warmed up but when he did he was un hittable. Norman shut down the Vikings but it was a little too late. As the Spartans were having trouble scoring on the afternoon. The Vikings ended up winning on the afternoon 9-6. That was the first loss of the year for the Spartans they are now 4-1. The Spartans are taking on the Shady Spring Tigers on Monday March 31st at 4:30 @ Spartans Yards with Junior Varsity immediately following. Please come out and support your local Spartans at Spartan Yards.

The Greenbrier East Spartans traveled to Hunnicutt Field in Princeton to take on the Princeton Tigers. This was the first game of the much-anticipated 2008 season. For the Spartans Senior Alan Level was on the mound. The Spartans found themselves down 1-0 at the end of the first inning. After the second inning went scoreless the Spartans had their opportunities in the third to get on the board but once again came up scoreless. The Spartans finally got on the board when Junior Steve Smith drove in Senior Michael Cochran. Thanks to some errors from the Spartans the Tigers ended the third with a five run inning which put the Spartans down 6-1. The Spartans scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-4. The defense did the job holding the Tigers to no runs in the fifth and sixth. Thanks to excellent pitching from Senior Ryan Dodd, who was sidelined last year due to an injury. But showed this evening that his arm is just fine. Just ask the Tigers how his curve ball looked. So the Spartans had one more chance to tie it up in the top of the seventh inning. But thanks to some much-needed CLUTCH hitting and heads up base running the Spartans scored four runs. Which put the Spartans up 8-6 going into the bottom of the seventh. Senior Dodd showed why we missed him last year closing out the game with the win. The Spartans are back at home tomorrow evening against Wyoming East. Please come out and support your GEHS Spartans at Spartan Yards. Varsity starts at 5:00 pm and JV immediately after.
